Steam autoclave troubleshooting: wet packs, failed indicators and long cycles
This guide covers common symptoms and the questions to ask before calling for service. Always follow the manufacturer's manual, and stop using a sterilizer when a safety or sterility problem is suspected.
| Symptom | Common causes to check |
|---|---|
| Wet packs after the cycle | Heavy metal mass, dense wraps, crowded loads, skipped or short drying, opening the door too soon |
| Chemical indicator did not change | Steam did not reach the item: dense packaging, trapped air, wrong cycle, overloaded chamber |
| Failed Bowie-Dick test | Air leaks, door gasket problems, vacuum system faults or poor steam supply. Stop using the unit and call for service |
| Positive biological indicator | Process failure or a testing error. Quarantine, retest and follow your recall procedure |
| Cycles taking longer than usual | Large or dense loads, heating problems, water supply issues |
| Stains or spots on instruments | Water quality, residues from cleaning or detergents |
Daily care that prevents problems
- Wipe the door gasket and check it for cracks.
- Clean the chamber and drain strainer as the manual describes.
- Use the water quality the manufacturer specifies.
- Keep a log of cycles, tests and any faults.
When to call for service
Call when a Bowie-Dick or biological test fails without an obvious loading cause, when error codes repeat, or when the unit leaks steam or water. After a repair, test before returning the sterilizer to routine use, as the monitoring guide describes.
